mike casey

melody architect, storyteller, new york city saxophonist

Working with Mike Casey was both illuminating and thought provoking. Mike’s honesty about living his truth as a musician was inspiring and motivating for our students at Durham Jazz. We look forward to working with Mike in the future and wish him well in his career!

My 2nd grade son had great things to say about your performance on Wednesday. He says he now wants to play the saxophone! Thank you for introducing our Roaring Brook students to your art.
— Erin Lamadrid, Roaring Brook Elementary PTO - Avon, CT

Mike is highly motivated to share his musical expertise with students. He has been playing saxophone for 17 years, & teaching saxophone lessons for 7. He has experience with students ranging from age 9 to 79, teaching all levels and many styles of music from classical to jazz to pop to funk. Mike has a great deal of interest in music education, sparked by his time at the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at The Hartt School, where the education was based on Jackie’s motto of “Each One Teach One” and furthered by his time in Spain while getting his master’s degree in Contemporary Performance/Music Production at Berklee’s Valencia selective campus. In addition to teaching all levels & styles of the saxophone, he is also available for lessons in:

  • beginner flute/clarinet

  • music theory / Jazz theory (all levels)

  • songwriting/composition (all levels/genres)

  • jazz improvisation lesson (all levels)

  • jazz ensemble (all levels)

Mike custom tailors all lessons to fit each students individual needs, while making lessons both fun and challenging. He has established himself as an in-demand saxophone/woodwinds teacher and currently maintains an active private lesson studio. Additionally, Mike has been on faculty at Simsbury High School (Jazz Band director), Music & Arts (Avon & Vernon, CT locations), Trinity College (Hartford, CT) and Martocchio Music. Recently, Mike's article on combining the artistic process of releasing an album with teaching was featured in both Music & Arts' The Vault blog (click to read) & in their Sound Teaching magazine, and his article on foundational exercies in improvision was featured on notable music education blog Soundfly (click to read).

In addition to private lessons, Mike is available for:

  • In-school clinics (for a wide variety of topics, ranging from jazz history/theory/improvisation, to saxophone techniques, music business, audition preparation, applying to music school, to composition)

  • Saxophone sectionals (jazz or concert band)

  • In-school performances and artist residencies (great for any age group, and we can easily tailor our performance to be very interactive/educational)

  • Group lessons
